Opportunities:

  • ISO standardized notation = improved intra and inter-organizational collaboration.
  • Standardized XML scheme = independent of modelling tools vendors.
  • The capability of being executed = process-oriented IT solutions.
  • The capability of being extended and adapted = widespread use and good ‘fit’

Threats:

  • The complexity of the specification = non-standardized solutions.
  • The complexity of the notation = low acceptance (ease of use, usefulness)
  • Poor interoperability between BPMB tools = bounded to specific products or vendors.
  • Non-standardized execution of BPMN models = bounded to the specific execution environment.

BPMN SWOT Analysis

Summary:

The table above summarizes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of modelling and managing business processes with BPMN.

It can be concluded that BPMN is a well-adopted process-modelling standard with good industrial support. Its major drawbacks are related to its complexity, which affects end users (e.g. difficult to learn, wrong interpretation of BPMN diagrams) as well BPMN tool vendors (i.e. partial and Non-standardized BPMN implementations). So the focal challenge for the future remains to assure strict implementation of BPMN standards in the corresponding modelling and execution environments.
