  • ISO standardized notation = improved intra and inter-ogranizational collaboration.
  • Standarized XML scheme = independent of modelling tools vendors.
  • Capability of being executed = process oriented IT solutions.
  • Capability of being extended and adapted = widespread use and good ‘fit’

  • Complexity of the specification = non-standardized solutions.
  • Complexity of the notation = low acceptance (ease of use, usefulness)
  • Poor interoperability between BPMB tools = bounded to specific product or vendor.
  • Non-standardized execution of BPMN models = bounded to specific execution environment.

BPMN SWOT Analysis

The table above summarizes the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of modeling and managing business processes with BPMN.

It can be concluded that BPMN is a well-adopted process-modeling standard with good industrial support. Its major drawbacks are related to its complexity, which affects end users (e.g. difficult to learn, wrong interpretation of BPMN diagrams) as well BPMN tool vendors (i.e. partial and nonstandardized BPMN implementations). So the focal challenge for the future remains to assure strict implementation of BPMN standard in the corresponding modeling and execution environments.

Gregor received his PhD in 2008 in the fields of software engineering and information systems and has nearly a decade of experience in BPMN, starting to investigate and actively use BPMN since its introduction in 2004. In addition, he has participated in the development of one of the first BPMN modeling utilities - a package of plugins for Visio, which were introduced early in 2005 and is the main author of the first BPMN poster (bpmn.itposter.net), which has been translated into several languages and already exceeded 50.000 downloads.
